The Maratona dles Dolomites Cycling Weekend

The Race

The Maratona dles Dolomites has just been completed for its 29th year (on July 5th 2015), with a field of around 9,000 from all over the world, including Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Britain, America, Australia, Brazil – and many others. With temperatures hotter than in previous years, it was a tough race for all concerned. However, the 2015 mantra of ‘forgiveness’ (every year has a new theme) appeared to extend to the stunning South Tyrol region itself, and the response and exhilaration from participants was, as usual, overwhelmingly positive. Luigi Salimbeni took out the top honours with an incredibly narrow margin over Roberto Cunico, and Chiara Ciuffini staked the flag for the women.

Take Up the Challenge

With many of us being passionate cyclists ourselves, we’ve been so inspired by the challenge and beauty of this unique annual race that we’ve designed a fantastic holiday itinerary based on participation in the 2016 Maratona dles Dolomites. Are you ready for the challenge?

One of the things we love about the race is that it’s not as high profile as some of the others on the European circuit, and it really promotes a friendly, inclusive community of cyclists. It attracts a good mix of professionals and amateurs and the fact that there are three courses means the tour is suitable for a range of abilities. The short course is 55km, the medium is 106km and the hard-core full course takes in 138km.

We’re not going to lie; this race is not for the faint-hearted! It encompasses some very challenging terrain through steep mountain passes, punishing ascents, and altitudes ranging from around 1700m to 4200m. However, you can go at your own pace and change to an easier course along the way if you’ve bitten off more than you can chew! You can even break off from the race and do your own thing if you want to.

The fabulous scenery and the wonderful blend of Tyrolean and Mediterranean culture of the Dolomites is your reward for all the hard work. The regional cuisine is outstanding, the people are friendly and welcoming and the pristine landscape is absolutely breath-taking.

We’ll Do the Details, You Do the Cycling!

As with all our activity holidays, we want to make sure you have the most memorable experience possible – so we’ll take care of all the details for you. We’ll organise your race registration, take you through a warm up day and brief you on conditions. There’ll be a guide to check your bike over and you’ll have plenty of time to familiarise yourself with the environment before the start of the race.

Bring On the Bucket List

We’re passionate about making people’s dreams come true on our activity holidays, and we know that this race is a bucket list item for many cyclists. We’re so excited about this new holiday because we know the fantastic feeling of achievement that completing such a challenge offers.

You’ll be tired, you’ll be sore, you may even be walking like a cowboy – but when you finish, you’ll literally be on top of the world. Or the Dolomites at least!
