Located in Köngäs village 8 km from the Finnish ski resort of Levi, the Hotel Taivaanvalkeat sits on the banks of the Ounasjoki River and is the perfect base for both winter and summer trips to Finland. From Taivaanvalkeat you can easily embark on an exciting range of adventures and activities including downhill and cross country skiing, dog sledding, hiking and fishing. Originally a Logger’s homestead the main building has 13 newly renovated double en-suite bedrooms with a central dining area all constructed using indigenous species of pine and natural stone.
In the grounds down by the river there is a spacious wood heated sauna and hot tub down that can be hired for 2 hours at the end of a busy day. If you want to truly embrace the Finnish way an ice hole is kept open in the frozen river ready for a bracing icy plunge after a sauna! Saunsa and icy dips are all part of Finnish culture and a great way of integrating yourself into local life.
For families looking for more privacy you can choose to stay in a separate house with three bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen. Alternatively you can choose the rooms on the first floor of the main building that can be sectioned off and accessed through its own front door. This would provide an extended family the perfect set up with the bedrooms leading off from a central sitting room which would remain exclusive to the family.
On the edge of the property three Elves’ Cottages with timber walls and open fire places create an unusual but intimate place for lunches and dinners and add a sense of adventure epecially during Christmas and New Year when it is also possible to visit Santa Claus.
During the winter season there is also the Tontulla cafeteria open daily and available for private hire or for snacks during the day. The most famous menu at Tontulla is ‘The Heavenly Feast’, a legendary dish serving you the very best of Lapland on one plate.
